Pune: A 23-year-old electrician was arrested on Monday night on the charge of raping an 85-year-old woman and and attempting to kill her around 7pm on Sunday on the service staircase of a housing society near Hinjewadi , Pimpri Chinchwad police said. "The woman is currently undergoing treatment in a hospital. Doctors told us her condition is stable now," assistant inspector Vijaykumar Dhumal told TOI on Tuesday.

The woman's relative (57) lodged a complaint with the Hinjewadi police. The man has admitted to his involvement in the crime, the officer said. The electrician was taken into custody from Sakhare Vasti area in Hinjewadi on a tip-off.

He has been charged under sections 64 ( rape ), 109 (attempt to murder), 115 and 118 (voluntarily causing grievous hurt) of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. "He was on Tuesday produced before a court that remanded him to police custody till Sept 27," Dhumal said.The man attacked the woman in front of her flat, where she stayed with her family, on the fifth floor and then on the service staircase on the sixth floor.

"After noticing the woman alone in front of her flat, the suspect attacked her. He beat her and forcibly took her to the staircase on the sixth floor and raped her," the officer added. The woman fell unconscious after the suspect tried to strangle her to death.

"The woman's relatives started to look for her when they did not see her around and found her lying unconscious. They took her to a nearby hospital," he said. The officer said t.
