That starts with making sure that you legally can. For Louisianans gearing up to vote for president and other offices and measures on the Nov. 5 ballot, now’s the time to be strategizing, as some key deadlines are upon us.
If you’re not currently registered and want to do so in person or by mail, you must visit your parish registar’s office or have your application postmarked by Monday, Oct. 7. You’ll need a photo ID and, if it does not contain a current address, a utility bill or some other proof of residence.
After that, you’ve got an additional week if you want to register online through the secretary of state’s web site. The deadline there is Oct. 15, and the address is https://voterportal.
sos.la.gov/VoterRegistration .
Make sure you have a Louisiana driver's license or Louisiana special ID card in hand; you’ll need it to complete the process. If you've been registered in the past but have moved in the last few years or haven’t voted in several recent federal elections, you might want to check your registration to make sure you haven’t been moved to the inactive list or canceled.
