The Shivers hitmaker, whose music was disparaged by Rod Stewart earlier this year, has been a firm fixture in the charts since the early 2010s. He has released some of the biggest hits in recent history since his debut single, The A Team, including Perfect, Thinking Out Loud and Shape of You.

It seems Ed believes this chart-topping status may have helped his game, tapping into that infamous attention rockstars tend to attract. Move over Beatlesmania, the 33-year-old singer has declared he would ‘be a virgin’ without the help of his music. Poking fun at himself on Instagram, he shared a clip in which he was sat playing Pokemon on a Nintendo Switch hooked up to a giant arena screen.

‘If I wasn’t a musician, I would be a virgin,’ Ed quipped before the camera panned to an Ivysaur in the middle of a Pokemon battle. In the caption, he added: ‘Pokemon Stadium in the stadium #superawesomewickedcool #wannacometomybirthdayparty #itlbefunpromise #cake.’ One fan was quick to point out that this contradicts his claims from his 2015 autobiography, in which he said he had never played video games growing up.

‘We didn’t own a video games console and I honestly think that was one of the best things my mum never did,’ Ed wrote in Ed Sheeran: A Visua.
