Pune: Two men threatened a 24-year-old scrap collector with a sharp weapon and robbed him of his cellphone in Chikhali on Sept 10. The duo also forced him to reveal the PIN of his UPI app and later withdrew Rs51,000 from his bank account. The victim approached the Chikhali police on Wednesday to lodge a complaint.

Assistant inspector Ram Gomare of the Chikhali police told TOI that around 1pm, the victim was sitting outside the gate of a housing complex in Chikhali when two men on a motorcycle stopped near him. "The duo posed as policemen and threatened him with a billhook. They forced him to reveal the PIN of his UPI app," Gomare said.

He said when the victim refused to share the PIN, one of them hit the victim on his back with the hilt of the billhook. "Following this, the victim shared the PIN with the men. The duo then snatched his cellphone and sped," he said.

Gomare said later, the victim found out that Rs51,000 had been withdrawn from his bank account through his UPI. An officer from the Pimpri Chinchwad police said, "We are working on some clues. We will soon make arrests.
