Liverpool City Council issued the warning on social media A "do not" warning was issued by the council to all drivers in the city. Liverpool City Council posted on X, formerly Twitter , urging people to be aware of QR codes on parking meters. The local authority said the QR codes are a scam and for people to not use them.

A spokesperson for Liverpool City Council said council staff are "working hard to remove them" from the parking meters. They added that the council "never use" QR codes on machines in the city and advised only to download apps from an app store or a provider website. On X, the council said: "If you see a QR code like this on a parking meter - DO NOT SCAN IT! "This is a scam! Some codes have been placed on our meters and we are working hard to remove them.

We NEVER use QR codes on our machines - Only download apps from an app store or provider website." Back in September last year, consumer rights company Which? said it received several reports of scammers sticking dodgy QR codes on ticket machines in car parks. Ticket machines often contain scannable QR codes, which enable drivers to download the car park operator's app to pay for their parking.

However, scammers are sticking fake codes to machines in an attempt to trick victims. If you scan a dodgy code, you'll be taken to a website where you'll be asked to enter your payment details. If you enter your details, you may be signed up for a recurring monthly payment.
