Sunday, August 25, 2024 A serious travel warning has been issued for Mexico as the country grapples with a devastating dengue fever outbreak. Health officials have confirmed that over 100 people have lost their lives to the mosquito-borne disease this year alone, while more than 170,000 cases have been reported. The outbreak, primarily attributed to the DENV-3 strain, has raised significant concerns among travelers and public health experts.

The DENV-2 strain, known for its more severe symptoms, has also been detected in some areas. Global Spread of Dengue The increasing incidence of dengue fever is not confined to Mexico. Cases have reached record highs in the United States, with Florida reporting 18 locally acquired infections.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that nearly 2,700 cases have been reported in the US this year. France has also issued a travel alert following a locally caught case of dengue in Nice. The World Health Organization (WHO) has highlighted the dramatic global spread of dengue, with over 100 countries affected.

The Americas, South-East Asia, and Western Pacific regions bear the brunt of the disease, accounting for 70% of the global burden. Symptoms and Prevention Dengue fever, often referred to as “breakbone fever,” can cause a range of symptoms, including high fever, headache, body aches, nausea, and rash. In severe cases, it can lead to life-threatening complications.
