Ryan Reynolds stars as Deadpool in Deadpool and Wolverine. Photo: Disney. We shouldn’t worry too much about the plot of Deadpool & Wolverine.

The people behind it certainly didn’t. Five screenwriters are credited for the 34th entry in the never-ending Marvel Cinematic Universe – a crowded party and, as such, you would expect at least one of its creators to include a fizzy, memorable one-liner or a classy, coherent exchange. These are, I’m sorry to report, impossible demands.

Smug, senseless and staggeringly pointless, Deadpool & Wolverine isn’t so much a misstep for superhero cinema, but instead a ghastly low point for big-screen storytelling. This is for the people who told us that Hollywood was dying, that all the original ideas were taken, that blockbuster movies were rotting our brains. They may have had a point.
