Misunderstandings about charges, pre-paid packages, and the use of onboard accounts can lead to surprise costs One of the advice by the expert is to not tip twice for drinks and spa treatments. Cruise ships are known for their luxurious drinks and spa treatments, offering travelers a chance to relax and rejuvenate. However, it is advisable to pay smartly while availing any of these services, experts have warned.
The expert from The Points Guy said: “Most cruise ships now automatically add a gratuity to bar bills, often in the amount of 18 percent to 20 percent of the total. “Such automatic gratuities are also becoming more common in ship spas. But many first-time cruisers don't know this and write in a hefty tip at the "additional tip" line on bills at cruise ship bars and spas.
“Be sure to ask if a gratuity has already been included before adding another 15 percent or 20 percent to the total. Otherwise, you may end up tipping twice.” Also, passengers who pre-purchase packages for drinks or specialty dining sometimes get charged again onboard if they forget to notify staff or don’t understand packa.
