Pune: Cybercrooks posing as courier company officials and Mumbai police officers duped a software engineer (28) of Rs20 lakh, claiming drugs were found in a foreign-bound parcel bearing her name as the sender, adding that a case had been registered against her. The fraud occurred on July 4, when the woman was at her home in Tathawade. She lodged a complaint with the Wakad police on Aug 22.
The victim first received a call from an unknown caller claiming to be a courier company official. He said drugs were found in a parcel allegedly sent by her, leading to a case registered against her with the Andheri police in Mumbai. “The caller connected her to a man claiming to be an officer from the anti-narcotics department in Mumbai,” said the Wakad police officer.
The crook posing as a police officer promised to get her out of the case. “He told her to download an app for a video call. He took her bank and Aadhaar details for ‘verification’,” said the officer.
They then obtained a loan of Rs20 lakh on her behalf, before transferring the money from her account to another one.
