Pune: Some thieves resorted to the power-trip trick at 49 ATM kiosks of State Bank of India in Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad, and cleaned up Rs1.28 crore between Dec 14, 2017, and April 16, 2019. The fraudsters would snap the power supply at the ATM kiosks immediately after the cash was dispensed.
In the absence of electricity, transactions would not reflect in the bank's records. Sub-inspector (cyber) Rameshwar Rewale on Saturday said, "If the power supply to an ATM kiosk is snapped before transaction slips come out following cash withdrawals, the transactions do not reflect in the bank's records. All the fraudsters had accounts with State Bank of India (SBI).
They would later approach the bank and claim that money was debited from their account despite not getting the cash during ATM transactions. In the absence of records, the bank would credit the withdrawn sum back to their accounts." An FIR related to cheating was registered on Sept 27 in this connection after SBI's ATM service provider, Tata Communications Payment Solution Limited, filed a complaint with the city cybercrime police .
Rewale said, "Amit Chavan (50), an official from Tata Communications Payment Solution Limited, lodged the complaint."
