Pune: A criminal on police records was brutally hacked to death with broken glass bottles, stones and cement paver blocks by a group of seven minor boys at Vandemataram Chowk in Wanowrie around 1.30am on Friday. The Wanowrie police later detained six of the seven assailants and are searching for the remaining one.

Police identified the deceased as Raju Shivsharan (36), who had nine cases of murder, planning dacoity, and others to his name in the past, registered with the Wanowrie and Hadapsar police since 2023. Shivsharan’s aide, a 16-year-old boy, injured his head after being hit by a glass bottle, when he tried to intervene and save the victim, the police said. The teenager later lodged a complaint with the Wanowrie police.

Senior inspector Sanjay Patange said, “The teenager stated in his complaint that he was having a chat with Shivsharan at Vandemataram Chowk when the gang of seven approached them and picked a quarrel with Shivsharan over demand for money to consume liquor. He said that when Shivsharan refused to give them money, they started kicking and punching him, and later attacked him with glass bottles, stones and paver blocks.” Patange said the minor boys detained are school dropouts, all in the age group of 16 and 17 years.

Shivsharan was externed from Pune district for one year in March 2022. He returned to the city on completion of the externment period in 2023, added Patange. We also published the following articles recently Police act tough, jail 114 ha.
