Sean, a veteran on the show since 1985, was set for a return later this year to participate in Gail Platt's climactic Christmas storyline when Helen bids adieu to the Cobbles f ollowing an impressive fifty-year tenure. Originally slated to come back as part of Gail's send-off, plans have changed with Sean's surprise exit prompting Coronation Street to find a last-minute alternative for the storyline.

A representative for Coronation Street told The Mirror: "Sean Wilson has stepped down from filming for personal reasons." Reportedly, Helen is deeply disappointed that Sean cannot be included in her departing plot, and a source reported: "It has come as a complete and utter shock to everyone - and his sudden exit has rocked everyone involved with Corrie." The source continued, explaining Sean's abrupt departure to The Sun: "Sean was loving his time on the show, and he was very popular on set.

He had filmed scenes with loads of the cast, but then suddenly he was summoned to head off.
