Pune: The Deccan Gymkhana police investigating Tuesday's sandalwood theft attempt from a bungalow in a lane off Law College Road found CCTV footage of six men riding on two motorcycles along the road towards Nal stop. Further investigations revealed that the dacoits fled towards Ahilyanagar. Police said they have also obtained other important clues, and that the dacoits conducted reconnaissance of the bungalows and societies on Law College and BMCC roads.

The six dacoits charged at constables Mahesh Tambe and Ganesh Satav in the narrow lane of Abhinav School off Law College Road around 2.30am on Tuesday. They assaulted Tambe with a hacksaw in front of a locked bungalow.

Tambe pulled out his service pistol, and two of the suspects attempted to snatch it. Tambe then fired two bullets in the direction of the dacoits, who fled. Tambe, who was admitted to a hospital, was discharged later on Tuesday evening.

Police commissioner Amitesh Kumar appreciated the presence of mind of the constables and their actions to prevent a crime. The garden of the bungalow has two big sandalwood trees, and police suspect that the dacoits were sandalwood thieves. Deputy commissioner of police (zone I) Sandeep Singh Gill told TOI, "We have obtained some important clues, and the case will be detected soon.

" According to the police, the dacoits went towards Nal Stop Chowk, from where they went towards Deccan and then Yerawada..
