Pune: Kondhwa police are looking for the estranged son-in-law of Dilip Balasaheb Gaikwad's (48) elder brother in connection with Monday afternoon's firing when three men shot at Dilip in front of his office near Shatrunjay temple. The three assailants are friends of the estranged son-in-law of Dilip's elder brother Raju Gaikwad . They were arrested the same afternoon and on Tuesday produced before a city court, which ordered their custodial remand till Sept 21.

Contrary to initial reports that the attacker who fired three rounds at Dilip was a 17-year-boy, police said verification of his birth certificate showed he is 18-years-and-four-months old. He was formally arrested along with his two accomplices. "We have seized the bike used in the crime," senior inspector Vinay Patankar told TOI.

"So far, the arrested trio have maintained that they committed the crime since their friend was going through a rough time with his in-laws. We are verifying if they were promised money for the attack and a clear picture will emerge once we arrest the son-in-law," Patankar said. Raju (49) has said in his complaint that his son-in-law was involved in a marital dispute with his daughter after the two married on March 29 without the family's consent.

Two months later, their relationship ran into trouble and his daughter returned to her paternal home. His son-in-law and friends would frequent his and Dilip's business establishment and often stare at them threateningly, the complaint said. Police.
