Pune: The city traffic police have decided to intensify their action against drunk drivers Monday onwards in light of the forthcoming state assembly elections and to avert accidents on the city roads during night hours. Thepolice will create 27 special checkpoints on various roads and junctions as part of the drive. These points will be monitored by 127 personnel between 11pm and 3 am.
"There will be zero tolerance for drunk driving, triple-seat and wrong-side driving," Pune police commissioner Amitesh Kumar said. "We have given calibrated breath analysers to the teams. They will use disposable pipes to conduct breath analyser tests on motorists to verify if they are drunk.
Also, our teams will be placing awareness standees at these spots," Kumar said. "We will not tolerate drunk driving on the city roads. Cases will be filed against offenders, and the motorists will be prosecuted as per the law," he said.
The police have also formed 14 flying squads to check the city roads and keep an eye on illegal activities. "The action taken by these teams will be monitored by an officer of the rank of assistant commissioner of police," the police chief added..
