Friday, July 12, 2024 Copenhagen is pioneering an innovative approach to increase tourist engagement and promote sustainable practices. The city is trialling a new program aimed at encouraging tourists to participate in environmentally friendly activities. As part of this initiative, tourists who engage in actions such as litter picking or using public transport could be rewarded with free food, cultural experiences, and tours.

This scheme, known as CopenPay, reflects Copenhagen’s commitment to reducing the environmental impact of tourism while enhancing visitor experiences. CopenPay Trial Scheme Overview Visit Copenhagen, the city’s tourism authority, introduced the CopenPay trial scheme to incentivize tourists to minimize their environmental footprint. The trial period runs from July 15 to August 11.

During this time, tourists can transform their eco-friendly actions into currency for various cultural activities and experiences. The program aims to integrate sustainable tourism practices into the everyday activities of visitors, promoting a greener approach to exploring the city. Participation and Rewards More than 20 operators are collaborating in the CopenPay program, offering rewards to tourists who can show proof of using public transport to reach their venues.

For instance, tourists who bring plastic waste to the National Gallery of Denmark can gain access to a workshop where they can transform the waste into art. Other actions that CopenPay rewards include cycling.
