Netflix has just added medical drama The Resident to its library after it originally aired on Fox in the US. The six seasons aired from 2018 until 2023 when it was cancelled following a decrease in ratings. The series focuses on the lives of staff members at the fictional Chastain Park Memorial Hospital in Atlanta, Georgia.

A critical eye looks into real-life bureaucratic practices of the medical industry. Matt Czuchry stars as Dr Conrad Theodore Hawkins, with Emily VanCamp as Nic Marie Nevin, a nurse practitioner and Conrad's love interest. The series had been through many changes since the concept first came to light.

In August 2016, it was announced Showtime was developing a new series, known as The City, described as a dark medical drama. The series, however, was never produced and the following year it was reported Fox had purchased it from Showtime, changing the name to The Resident. The original synopsis for the show was: "A dark medical drama [that] centres around an idealistic young doctor who begins his first day of residency under the supervision of a senior resident who appears tough and brilliant, but turns out to be a cunning and deadly psychopath.

" As for the critical response, the series was unpopular with some medical professionals, with various sources calling it "grossly unrealistic".
