Pune: A civil contractor (48) from Pimpri has fallen victim to an online share trading scam, losing Rs 21 lakh between July 1 and Aug 16. The victim filed a complaint with the cyber crime cell of the Pimpri Chinchwad police, prompting a formal case to be registered on Monday. According to sub-inspector SP Deshmukh of the Pimpri Chinchwad police, the contractor first came across a stock market investment advertisement on social media on July 19.

“When he contacted the cellphone number mentioned in the advertisement, he was added to a group on a messenger app," Deshmukh said. The scammer promised substantial returns on investments. “The victim transferred Rs20.

9 lakh to the different bank account numbers provided to him,” he said. The victim realised that he was being duped when he was unable to withdraw his funds and the suspects stopped responding to his calls. The police have requested transaction details from the contractor's bank for investigation.
