Regionalism Not Matter For Constitution Review – Bamidele Opeyemi ABUJA – Senators from the northern part of Nigeria have vehemently opposed agitation for the return to regional system of government. This happened at the ongoing exercise to amend the 1999 Constitution which began with a two-day retreat organised by the Senate Committee on Constitution Review, in collaboration with the Policy and Legal Advocacy Centre (PLAC) in Kano. Speaking to journalists on the sideline of the event, some of the lawmakers from the region argued that their areas did not benefit from the system when it was practised.
Their submissions were contrary to the positions held by their colleagues from the Southern part of the country. A ranking Senator from Bauchi Central Senatorial District, Abdul Ningi, told journalists that his people would never support the idea because they did not enjoy any form of development when the system of government was practised in the First Republic. Ningi said: “I have heard so much about regional government or federalism and I have heard people going about, canvassing for such ideas.
