On Thursday, people of all ages are invited to explore the compost petting zoo at Historic Barns Park. Compostable items include egg shells, coffee grounds, fruit peels and other food waste. Volunteers working with compostable material.

TRAVERSE CITY — The Michigan Recycling Coalition and the Michigan Organics Council are hosting the Great Michigan Compost Tour around the state this fall. Locally, SEEDS Ecology and Education Centers will present the Great Northern Michigan Compost Crawl next week. Sarna Salzman, SEEDS executive director, said they are helping coordinate several events in the area.

On Thursday, people of all ages are invited to explore the compost petting zoo at Historic Barns Park. “We have eight composting technologies on display,” Salzman said. These include a tumbler system and worm bins.

A bucket can be filled with food scraps and worms, which will eat the organic materials. Another of the local events will feature Danielle Todd, who is from the organization Make Food Not Waste in Detroit. Todd will speak on Monday, Sept.

16 at 1 p.m. in the Leelanau County Government Center.
