HARPERS FERRY — As the leaves have nearly disappeared from the trees and the hot temperatures of summer have turned to late fall coolness, it could now be the ideal time to hike Maryland Heights. For those who live in the area, or those just visiting, the hike up the summit just across the Potomac River from Harpers Ferry is somewhat a rite of passage — you must do it at least once. The walk can be a bit intimidating for those who are not regular hikers, as the Maryland Heights Trail covers 4.

5-6.5 miles round trip depending on whether one completes the loop or just visits the Overlook Trail. Much of the trail is on the steeper side, with a 12% grade at its steepest.

Even for those who are not avid hikers, the route can be done with a little effort and time to enjoy. The main ridge at Maryland Heights has the ruins of Union Civil War forts, trenches and infantry encampments. There are multiple signs sharing information on the historic aspects of the site.

The trail starts at the trail head just across the river from Harpers Ferry, which can be accessed by walking across the pedestrian bridge, turning left on the towpath and going approximately a half mile to the start. When heading up, one should realize that there are different stages to the trail. Initially, there is a combined trail that then forks to allow one to head to the Stone Fort or to the Overlook.
