Vadodara: Heavy rains across the central Gujarat region have brought life to a standstill since Sunday. Some roads were cut off, and an old bridge on the Bodeli-Chhota Udepur road collapsed. A couple died when a house collapsed due to rains in Bamanwada village of Mahisagar district.

The wall of their dwelling collapsed due to heavy rains on Monday. The deceased were identified as Lakshman Pateliya (45) and his wife Kailash (42). A bridge between Bodeli and Chhota Udepur on the national highway connecting the state with Alirajpur in Madhya Pradesh collapsed due to the downpours.

The bridge was around five decades old, and only light vehicles were allowed to use it. A temporary alternative in the riverbed was also damaged by the turbulent Bharaj river. Several persons were moved to safe places in Panchmahal district, particularly low-lying areas of Godhra town.

On Monday night, a car fell into a stormwater drain on Bamroli Road in Godhra, but two persons in it managed to come out safely. In Dahod, two persons riding a motorcycle were swept away in the current in a rivulet near Sagtala village on Tuesday afternoon. They managed to swim to safety and were unhurt.

A similar incident had taken place in Mandva village of the district late on Sunday night when a van was swept away in the floods in a rivulet. Two persons commuting in the van came out safely. All major reservoirs in the region, including Kadana and Panam, were overflowing.

A baby was brought out of a house by a rescue.
