Vadodara: MS University will celebrate the tenth National Handloom Day on Wednesday at the Faculty of Family and Community Sciences. The department of clothing and textiles and Institute of Fashion Technology are celebrating the day to honour and promote India’s rich heritage of handloom weaving . National Handloom Day, observed on Aug 7, marks the launch of the Swadeshi Movement in 1905.

During the day, there will be a public lecture and documentary screening by master weaver Kanu Salvi on ‘The Legacy of Patan Patola : Celebrating Handloom Mastery’. Curated handloom textiles from across the country will be on display from museum collections of the department of clothing and textiles. Similarly, there will be a live demonstration and hands-on session on handlooms for schoolchildren, teaching them how to create a variety of weaves using diverse materials.

This will be held under the banner of ‘Weaving Diversity: Creating Fabrics’ at the weaving lab of the Institute of Fashion Technology. There will also be an exhibition-cum-sale of traditional and contemporary handloom products, a short quiz and a window display of items made using handlooms.
