THE FUNERAL service for a talented and vibrant artist who died following a swimming tragedy in Mayo over the weekend will be held later this week. Cathy Hughes , aged in her 60s, tragically drowned at Old Head Beach in Louisburgh on Sunday. But despite efforts by emergency services to save her, she sadly passed away.

The mum-of-two, from Westport in Mayo , was living in Salthill, Galway. Her work was inspired by the west of Ireland, including Mayo, Galway , and the Aran Islands. Cathy, who began creating art as a child, was influenced by her mother Maura Kelly.

Her work has been included in many private collections including that of HRH Prince Albert of Monaco. Cathy's removal is on Thursday July 25, at the Church of Christ the King, Salthill in advance of requiem mass at 2pm. Condolences poured in for the talented artist online.

One person said: “Cathy brought brightness to life where she gave so much yet enjoyed the simple pleasures of life - bringing these experiences through her lovely art. “She was always a joy who adored her nearest and dearest. “The angels came singing in triumph to bring your lovely Cathy home.

"Her beautiful perfume of life will forever remain in all of our hearts.” Another said: “Deeply shocked and saddened to hear the dreadful news. I enjoyed many walks and chats with Cathy.

“She loved life, her children and grandchildren, and was so proud of them all. "It's so hard to believe that someone so talented, vibrant, full of life and love has.
