Bargain Hunt: Catherine Southon breaks blue team's bird scarer Catherine Southon is best known for being an antiques expert on BBC shows like Bargain Hunt. She worked her way up from an administrative job to Head of Scientific and Maritime Works of Art at Sotheby's. Specialising in scientific instruments and maritime works of art, she started working as an independent consultant.

Her interest in antiques dates back to her university years and while studying for her Master's degree, she curated an exhibition on Rock 'n' Roll memorabilia. As part of the exhibition she asked Hilary Kay from Sotheby’s and the Antiques Roadshow to come and give a talk. Inspired by her, Catherine decided she would launch her own career in the antiques world.

After graduating, Catherine applied for a job at Sotheby’s in the Collectors Department. She began answering the phones and filing, eventually becoming Head of Department. She now runs her own saleroom in Croydon, Surrey.
