Art is known to enflame the soul, challenge the mind, and open new pathways of thinking. Cañon City residents will be able to explore art from Cañon City High School students during an art show and silent auction, organized by CCHS senior Maddison Taylor. As part of her graduation capstone project, the art show will be from 5 to 6:30 p.

m. Wednesday at the CCHS art rooms 501 and 502 (located on the northwest side of the campus). “I’ve always loved art and making things — I prefer to express myself visually,” Taylor said.

“My hands love doing things, I always have to be coloring or drawing ...

I want to support the art program, because it’s my favorite class, and they’ve supported me throughout the years to foster creativity and innovative thinking.” Taylor also said the art program is largely funded by a $5/student buy-in at the beginning of every semester — which leads to a less-than-stellar budget to rely on when purchasing materials. “I began asking myself, ‘What if we had more [money] than that? What would we be able to make if we had bigger utensils or better quality materials?'” she said.

She began constructing the idea for a large-scale art show during her sophomore year and, with the show just on the horizon, is busy making last-minute adjustments. “It’s all student-made art ..

. they have all been donated from the past few weeks,” Taylor said. “I have plenty of ceramics, paintings, drawings, sketchbooks, and portfolios.
