While everyone is roughly aware of detecting tumours as a sign of cancer, and the general genetic or physical screenings available to them, one expert is warning many women may dismiss early indicators of gynaecological cancer as the symptoms and types are often shrouded in myths and misconceptions. Valentina Milanova, women's health expert and founder of gynaecological health company Daye , highlighted the five main warning signs “that shouldn’t be ignored”, in honour of Gynaecological Cancer Awareness Month. Some signs are more likely to ring alarm bells than others, with the predominant one being abnormal vaginal bleeding.

The expert described this as a “critical warning sign for several gynaecological cancers” and urged people to get it addressed by a professional as soon as possible. Similarly, persistent pain in your pelvis or abdomen can also be an early indicator of cancer, as well as other potential health issues. Changes in your toilet habits can be a major sign that something isn’t right particularly when paired with unexplained weight loss or persistent bloating.

Consistent feelings of tiredness or fatigue can also be an indicator of cancer, although Valentina noted this is a more “non-specific symptom” it can point to a myriad of cancers not just gynaecological ones. Among the more specific symptoms for gynaecological symptoms, the expert highlighted that certain infections can increase your risk of cancer or reveal your predisposition. She explai.
