Thursday, January 23, 2025 The National Bank of Cambodia (NBC) unveiled the innovative BAKONG Tourists app on Wednesday, developed in collaboration with VISA, to simplify digital payment processes for international travelers visiting Cambodia. According to an NBC press release, foreign tourists can now seamlessly conduct digital transactions by downloading the BAKONG Tourists app on their smartphones and linking it to their VISA cards. After linking, users can transfer money from their VISA card accounts directly into their BAKONG wallets.

They can then make hassle-free payments by scanning KHQR codes, accepted at nearly 4.5 million merchants across Cambodia, the release added. Serey emphasized that the introduction of the BAKONG Tourists app in partnership with VISA supports the Cambodian government’s initiatives to promote a digital economy while encouraging a more inclusive society.

The governor highlighted that the BAKONG Tourists app, introduced by the NBC in August 2024, is designed to streamline digital payment processes for both international travelers and local businesses. She further explained that the app offers a convenient experience with features such as swift account top-ups, effortless digital transactions, and an intuitive interface. In November 2023, the NBC had also revealed the launch of the BAKONG Tourists app in collaboration with Mastercard.
