Pune: An ownership dispute over two portions of land — divided by a proposed road and located between two housing societies in Sus — took a violent turn on Wednesday afternoon when a builder and two others assaulted members of one of the societies with a baseball bat, kicked and punched them, and attempted to mow down one of them with an earth-moving machine. A Hinjewadi police team rushed to the site on being alerted about the violence and arrested the builder, Yashwant Shankarrao Nimhan (55), on charges of attempted murder, obscene acts, causing hurt by dangerous weapons or means, criminal intimidation and common intention. The police also booked two of his relatives on the same charges.

Senior inspector Kanhaiya Thorat of the Hinjewadi police said, "The builder and the housing society concerned are involved in a dispute over possession of land. We are searching for the two others named in the FIR." The Teerth Tower housing society has claimed ownership of the 10,000sq ft portion of the divided land adjacent to their compound.

The proposed road stretch has been handed over to the district collector for development. The builder also staked claim on the same land portion. Ashish Kadam, a resident of the Teerth Tower society, told TOI, "For the past few months, the builder has been harassing our society members by claiming that he owns the portion of the land touching our compound.

A society member in February lodged a complaint against the builder with the Hinjewadi polic.
