After he deliberately wrote off his car and started gouging holes in the ceiling of his flat, he was detained under the Mental Health Act and confined to a psychiatric hospital for two weeks, where he was diagnosed as bipolar. On his discharge, he was confronted with the choice of a lifetime on medication or a lifetime of deteriorating mental health. Instead, he went in search of an alternative approach, consulting a broad range of leading experts, researchers and practitioners.
