Box Office Results: Twisters Conjures A Mighty Storm By Universal’s disaster epic Twisters overperformed this weekend at the box office, earning a massive $80.5 million from 4,151 theaters, per Deadline. That number is right behind Dune: Part Two ($82M) and tied with Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire ($80M), meaning the long-awaited sequel should spin its way to a $200M+ domestic finish.

Of course, neither Dune nor Godzilla dealt with much competition. Glen Powell and Daisy Edgar-Jones must contend with Marvel’s Deadpool and Wolverine, which will take a sizable chunk of the audience for the next month or so. At any rate, this is still a big win for Universal, mainly since Twisters erupted to a $123M global cume.

Imax and PLF screens account for 43% of the gross. Are we ready to call Powell a star yet? For comparison’s sake, the original Twister opened with $41.1M from 2,414 theaters in 1996.

Twisters bumped Despicable Me 4 down to second on the Top 10 chart, earning $23.8M (-45%) in its third week. The animated pic (also from Universal) has collected $259.

5M domestically and $574M worldwide. Inside Out 2 came in third with another $12.8M added to its immaculate $596.

3M haul. Pixar’s animated hit now sits at No. 15 on the All-Time Domestic chart behind Incredibles 2 ($608.

5M) and Star Wars: The Last Jedi ($620M). Worldwide, the sequel lands at No. 14 after passing Barbie ($1.
