High street staple Boots is preparing to shut down an additional 47 stores in the upcoming months. Back in June 2023, the company announced the permanent closure of 300 branches. So far, it has shuttered 253, with the remaining 47 poised to close their doors once the summer period concludes.

The retailer has sought to placate customers by confirming that all those affected by the closures will have another Boots store located within three miles of them. Additionally, staff members working at the closing branches will be offered alternate job positions. The reasoning behind the store closures, according to the chain, is to consolidate multiple stores situated near each other.

Boots emphasised this strategy in its quarterly results revealed last month, stating: "Evolving the store estate in this way allows Boots to concentrate its team members where they are needed and focus investment more acutely in individual stores with the ambition of consistently delivering an excellent and reliable service in a fresh and up-to-date environment," reports the Express . Tim Wentworth, CEO of the parent company Walgreens Boots Alliance, offered insight into the closures, remarking: "We continue to face a difficult operating environment, including persistent pressures on the US consumer and the impact of recent marketplace dynamics, which have eroded pharmacy margins."
