This is the bizarre moment a besotted boyfriend proposes to his partner while the couple were stuck on the roof of their car during Storm Bert . Ashley Stevens, 22, and Davie Woodley-Kingston, 24, were celebrating their first anniversary when their motor got swamped. The pair took to the roof of their car and phoned for help.

But Davie, who had been planning to propose, was swept away with emotion and proposed there and then. The pair had been on a romantic night away in Chard, Somerset, and were heading to nearby Taunton for a Nando's. But their BMW started to fill with water near Taunton racecourse on Sunday during Storm Bert.

Davie was forced to climb onto the car roof before pulling Ashley up to safety. And as they were shivering in the darkness waiting for rescue, Davie did the deed. "I was going to propose in our Airbnb cabin later that evening," the health and safety advisor at Southampton Docks told What's The Jam.

"But when the car got flooded it went so far off the plan. It was such a turn of events. I thought to myself that it would be memorable and so I just went for it.

" Rescuers from Taunton fire station arrived after about half an hour and pulled the couple, from Southampton, to safety. The firefighters were able to get the BMW out of the water and, incredibly, it started first time. Davie proposed again properly later that evening and gave Ashley her engagement ring which he'd been keeping at the Airbnb.

The flowers he bought for the occasion also survived, de.
