John David Ashton, the actor best known for his role as Detective Sergeant John Taggart in the Beverly Hills Cop series , has died at the age of 76. He passed away peacefully on Thursday in Fort Collins, Colorado , after battling cancer, his representative confirmed. During his 50-year career in Hollywood , Ashton appeared in more than 200 film, television, and stage productions.

He became a household name when he starred alongside Eddie Murphy, who took a brutal jab at the Golden Bachelor earlier this year , in the 1984 hit Beverly Hills Cop. In 1988, he co-starred in the action-comedy Midnight Run as a rival bounty hunter to Robert De Niro's character.
