Coimbatore: To prevent drunk driving , the Coimbatore police have advised all bar owners in the city to ensure that those visiting their bars in cars do not drive their vehicles back home while under the influence of alcohol. In a press note issued on Monday, the city police said they had registered drunken driving cases against 178 people, including 126 motorcycle riders, 18 luxury car drivers, and 34 four-wheeler drivers, from Friday to Sunday. The owners or representatives of the bars should ensure that those visiting their bars in cars should bring a driver with them.

Otherwise, the bar owner or management should arrange a vehicle with a driver to safely drop the drunk customer at his residence or arrange a driver for the customer. All the bars should have surveillance cameras inside and outside the premises and the owners should ensure that all the cameras function. It should have a storage capacity of at least for a month.

The bar owners should hand over the footage whenever police ask them. Legal action will be taken against the bars and their licences will be cancelled if the management fails to take necessary steps, the press note said.
