BAGUIO, Philippines – The aroma of fried rice filled the air as Baguio’s hospitality industry turned up the heat at “Rice and Shine 3.0,” part of the 17th Hotel and Restaurant Tourism (HRT) Weekend, on Thursday, October 3. With over 1,600 kilograms of rice used and each dish occupying its own space in a massive pan, attendees had the opportunity to sample some of the city’s finest fried rice creations.

Pre-heating gadgets were placed under the pan to keep the dishes warm throughout the event, ensuring every bite was as delicious as the first. BAGUIO FEAST. The Hotel and Restaurant Association of Baguio serves up 1,600 kilos of fried rice in 15 flavors, feeding nearly 16,000 people at a Baguio mall on Thursday, October 3, 2024.

– Mia Magdalena Fokno/Rappler Organized by the Hotel and Restaurant Association of Baguio (HRAB) at SM City Baguio, the culinary spectacle featured 15 flavors of fried rice from 12 popular local establishments, serving an estimated 16,000 eager food lovers. Taking center stage was an enormous 28-foot-wide fried rice pan, where each restaurant crafted its own specialty. From Vietnamese fried rice to adobo fried rice and Cordilleran-inspired yakimeshi, the lineup was a food lover’s dream.

Baguio Mayor Benjie Magalong opened the event with a lighthearted take on rice: “Rice may be avoided by diabetics, but it’s a highly nutritious staple rich in fiber, B vitamins, magnesium, and potassium. Don’t hesitate to eat rice – it’s our lifeb.
