The global tourism sector faces growing demands to align with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030. However, a whitepaper by the Digital Tourism Think Tank (DTTT), prepared for the Arabian Travel Market (ATM) 2025, reveals a sobering reality: only 15% of tourism-related SDGs are on track.

This data serves as a wake-up call, highlighting the urgent need for systemic reform to mitigate the environmental and social costs of tourism. UN projections suggest that by 2050, tourism-related energy consumption could increase by 154%, water usage by 152%, and waste production by 251%. Further compounding the issue, a joint study by Visa and Oxford Economics highlights a major consumer challenge: the lack of clear, accessible information on sustainable travel options, which hinders progress toward meaningful change.

The ATM 2024 Innovation Wall tackled these pressing issues, sparking discussions among industry experts and stakeholders. Proposed solutions included: Governments within the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) are also making strides toward sustainable tourism. Key initiatives such as the UAE Tourism Strategy 2031 and Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 demonstrate a strong regional focus on balancing economic growth with environmental conservation.
