Friday, November 8, 2024 Today marks a milestone for Angel Trains, Hitachi Rail, and TransPennine Express as they announce the completion of the United Kingdom’s pioneering intercity battery trial in Northern England. The groundbreaking 700kw battery not only achieved but in some instances exceeded, the trial’s objectives: The trial’s success confirms the viability of this battery technology for various applications to make rail journeys more affordable, eco-friendly, and dependable. Presently, using just one battery facilitates silent, emission-free travel at non-electrified stations.

During tests, the battery powered the train for a mile before and after stations, efficiently transitioning to diesel power without disrupting performance or schedules. This capability significantly lessens noise pollution and boosts air quality. Fuel savings exceeded expectations, with trial data showing a 35-50% reduction possible depending on train settings, battery use, and driving techniques.

Notably, the use of ‘Eco-mode’ often resulted in a 50% cost saving, as the battery exclusively powered the train through certain route segments and during station stops. On a trial journey, the battery impressively sustained 70km of battery-only operation, sufficient to traverse bridges, tunnels, and station approaches. This achievement positions Hitachi Rail to progress towards launching a fully operational intercity battery-electric train.

Based on empirical data, such a train could travel.
