A 33-year-old man from Amsterdam is being prosecuted for selling fake diplomas and forged Certificates of Good Conduct (VOG), the Public Prosecution Service (OM) announced. He traded in these false documents between 1 October 2022 and 16 July 2024. The police and the OM traced down the suspect during a larger investigation into fake diplomas.
The police bought a school diploma from the man in Oosterhout, and then immediately arrested him. Officers found two more fake diplomas in his car. They also seized 7,555 euros in cash and luxury products from the suspect.
The man also sold fake VOGs. Employers often request a VOG for job applicants who work with confidential information, personal data, financial services, or individuals in vulnerable positions. A VOG is also legally required to work in teaching, many childcare functions, and even as a taxi driver.
A man who bought a VOG from him had previously been convicted of a sexual offense. By selling that document to the man, the suspect created “a potentially dangerous situation,” the OM said. The man asked between 600 and 1,200 euros for a fake document.
He sold diplomas for teaching qualifications, healthcare, and services, among other things. It is not yet known whether buyers actually used the fake diplomas. A pro-forma hearing was held on Wednesday and the court released the suspect from pre-trial custody.
