Prayagraj : In a bizarre incident the Allahabad high court has come across a case in which the complainant had died three years before he lodged an FIR with the Kushinagar police . That was not all, the investigating officer duly recorded the statement of the dead man and filed a chargesheet against the accused as well. What left the court even more baffled was that the complainant had even signed the vakalatnama (affidavit) in the case on December 19, 2023, reports Rajesh Kumar Pandey.

The court quashed the criminal proceedings and questioned the integrity and competence of the police investigation. Justice Saurabh Shyam Shamshery said, “It is very strange that a dead person has not only lodged an FIR but has recorded his statement before investigating officer (IO) and, thereafter, a vakalatnama (affidavit) has also been filed on behalf of him in the present case. It appears that all the proceedings are undertaken by a ghost .

” Justice Shamshery in his order dated August 6, also directed the Kushinagar superintendent of police to investigate the conduct of the IO of this case.
