Doris, a Women's Land Army member and friend to Jenny, arrives in Darrowby to lend a hand at the Danby's farm. She also helps out at the Alderson's, where Helen encounters the Leeds native, sparking feelings of detachment from her sister.

Jenny, despite Helen's willingness to assist, encourages her to go back to James following his unexpected return, assuring her that they have enough support with Doris present. "I can manage without you," Jenny tells Helen, leaving her feeling excluded as she watches the growing camaraderie between her sister and Doris, reminiscent of bygone days.
