All Creatures Great and Small's Nicholas Ralph on animal co-stars All Creatures Great and Small was revived back in 2020, airing on Channel 5 to provide some escapism during the coronavirus lockdowns. The family-friendly drama is set in the 1930s in Yorkshire and is based on the series of books written by vet Alf Wight. Writing under the pen name James Herriot, his books tell stories inspired by his real-life experiences as a countryside vet.
The new adaptation, which is due to hit Netflix on August 14, follows the previous BBC series of the same name that aired back in the late 70s. The first season of the drama is made up of six episodes and a Christmas special and was filmed in conjunction with the 50th anniversary of the publication of the first book in the James Herriot series. In February 2024, the show was renewed for a fifth and sixth season.
While fans eagerly await the release of season five of All Creatures , it has been revealed that the first season will become available on Netflix later this week. Viewers will see Nicholas Ralph in the role of James Herriot and Samuel West playing his boss, Siegfried Farnon.
