Communities across the North East are braced for mass disorder today (Wednesday, August 7), as many businesses plan on rolling down shutters early. Police remain ready to tackle violence after a week of unrest, with forces across the nation monitor reports of at least 30 possible gatherings and threats against immigration law specialists, some of which had either closed or accepted offers of additional police protection. Businesses, such as restaurants, bars, shops and beauty parlours have been advised to close early, or not open at all, if there is a risk of disturbances.

The Northern Echo has pulled together a list of businesses confirmed to be taking these precautions ahead of what is expected to be a busy day. Darlington Bambudda Restaurant in Darlington said that they had boarded up their windows as a precaution to protect their building, but are planning on opening as usual.

Restaurant owners added: "Thank you for so many messages for helping us board the windows up voluntarily and free of charge." Durham Shaheen's Indian Restaurant, Durham, has followed suit, closing today after "far right flyers were given out in pubs." They added: "We do hope our customers understand that our safety is of concern, these violent protests are targeting black and brown people.
