In a recent interview, the television host admitted the industry can be "fickle" and she'd be prepared to work in Tesco if broadcasters didn't want her to return. The 49-year-old made her television debut on Big Brother in 2002 long before she became a household name.

Following her stint on the reality series, ITV picked up Alison as a reporter for This Morning in the same year. This would kick start a whirlwind career for Alison and see her become a regular host of not only This Morning but a range of shows including For the Love of Dogs and The Great British Bake Off. Despite her continued success, in a recent interview with The Guardian , the mum recalled a time in 2007 when she was left unused by This Morning and had no other work lined up.

To make ends meet, she found a job at a local hairdressers. She said: "There was a time when I couldn’t pay my mortgage and I was really famous. I’d answer the phone, do a few blow dries.

" When she recalls the story, she begins to cry but adds: "It’s not all good all of the time. But I was all right, you know? That’s television, it’s fickle and it’s part of my journey, part of my power." Alison humbly suggested The Great British Bake Off might not want her back next year.

She said: "And that’s OK. I know I’ll be OK, because I’ve been OK be.
