Pune: A woman was nabbed by alert residents after she tried to escape after snatching gold chain worth Rs 75,000 of a 79-year-old woman in a housing society at Sambhajinagar in Dhankawdi. "The accused is Deepa Chavan (34) from Dhankawdi, who is a first-time offender. She snatched the victim's chain when the victim walked towards a lift on the seventh floor.

The accused then made a bid to escape. The victim, however, overpowered her and tried to take back her chain. Chavan bit her on the hand and pushed her.

The elderly collapsed and sustained injuries to her hands and legs," said senior inspector Chhagan Kapse of Sahakarnagar police on Monday. Kapse said Chavan then used a staircase to rush downstairs. Although, the victim raised an alarm and alert neighbours overpowered Chavan.

Later, they alerted the local police station. A police team reached the spot and took her into custody. Chavan told police that she was a homemaker and committed the crime because she was in a state of depression, he added.

A police complaint relating to robbery was registered under the Bhartiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS)..
