The festival of lights is here! While Diwali is a time of celebration, it can also unfortunately trigger eye problems due to the increased air pollution caused by the bursting of crackers. Delhi is already covered under a layer of smog that has caused a rise in respiratory issues across the state. The Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) has ordered the implementation of stage two of the anti-pollution plan GRAP to curb further spread.

Air pollution not only causes respiratory problems but can also trigger eye problems including allergies, and irritation as crackers contain toxic chemicals like barium and dioxins that may cause damage to your eyes. Delhi air contains pollutants such as particulate matter (PM2.5 and PM10), sulphur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), and heavy metals can cause a range of issues like irritation, redness, burning, watering and even blurred vision in worst-case scenarios.

In rare cases, air pollution also increases the possibility of developing ocular surface disease, a serious eye condition that can even result in blindness. Despite these risks, it is possible to have a happy and safe Diwali, if you can keep a few things in mind while engaging in celebrations.
