Paramedics say that sadly nothing could be done to save a man pulled from the water at Rudyard Lake as an air ambulance was scrambled to the scene. Two ambulances were also among the resources sent to the beauty spot where police, firefighters and specialist search teams had been looking for a missing man. Staffordshire Police confirmed yesterday that a body had been found in the search for missing 77-year-old Hugh, of Leek.

While formal identification is still set to take place, the force believes the man they found to be the pensioner. StokeonTrentLive reported how Hugh had been reported missing at around 5.40pm on Tuesday, August 20 and it was believed he'd travelled to the beauty spot on the same day.

Mountain rescue volunteers along with search and rescue teams from around the country had been drafted in for the search, which reached a sad conclusion yesterday. West Midlands Ambulance Service say they were called to the scene just after 5.50pm.

A spokeswoman said: "We were called to reports of a patient in the water at Rudyard Lake. We sent two ambulances, a paramedic officer and the Midlands Air Ambulance from Staffordshire to the scene. On arrival we found one patient, a man, who had been rescued from the water by police.

Sadly, it quickly became apparent nothing could be done to save him and he was confirmed deceased at the scene." A police spokesman said: "We are not treating the death as suspicious and a file has been prepared for HM Coroner. We’d like to thank ev.
