The South Australian capital edged out several global cities including New York, Paris and Barcelona. Tallinn, the capital city of Estonia, was rated the second most beautiful city followed by Portsmouth, an island city in the Caribbean nation of Dominica.

The list, which names 20 international destinations, was compiled by the globally renowned design magazine Architectural Digest. The magazine described Adelaide as a place where visitors can 'find surf, sand dunes and Art Deco architecture'. 'Adelaide has rolling hills lush with high-quality grapes, making it the country’s wine capital.

' The list considered several factors such as architecture, historical relevance and natural appeal to compile list. 'The best cities offer something that can’t be found anywhere else,' the magazine stated. Other cities that made the cut include Singapore , Amsterdam, Rio de Janeiro, and Florence in Italy .
