‘Abstract Worlds’

“Abstract Worlds,” a group art exhibition featuring a variety of abstract styles, will open Aug. 3 at the Canvas + Clay Gallery, 233 F St., Eureka.

An Arts Alive! reception is planned for Aug. 3 from 6 to 9 p.m.

Ken Waldvogel has created a collection of bright bold geometric paintings that are a tantalizing treat for the eyes. The other artists from The Studio will exhibit abstract expressionistic paintings, abstract representational works and ceramic sculpture glazed with abstract design. Waldvogel, 35, has lived in Humboldt County all of his life and has been making art since 1999.

“Back then it was simple, now it’s geometric,” he said. “My favorite part about making art is choosing the colors. I love that there are so many colors out there to choose from.

It’s not just simple reds, blues, greens anymore. It’s a variety of colors. My favorite part about color choosing is I can go to Michael’s and there’s just a whole row of colors.

“With my geometric shapes I have three methods: freestyle, checkerboard and ruler,” Waldvogel said. “I can go freestyle, where I’m letting my hand just move and make these crazy shapes. Or, I go checkerboard.

Because checkerboard to me is very easy to do, and it’s easier to break down the shape when I’m doing a checkerboard. Or, a ruler and measuring all the shapes and sizes.” He added, “When I do my art, I feel joy because I love to see what my finished project is going to be, and every time I’m done with on.
