By Hannah MackayThe Detroit News Detroit — Henry Ford Health and Ascension Michigan launched a newly combined organization Tuesday that are rebrands Ascension’s southeast Michigan and Genesys health care facilities under the Henry Ford name along with all Henry Ford care sites. The joint Henry Ford organization will control more than 40% of the Metro Detroit hospital market share by revenue, according to one industry analyst, and produce an estimated $12 billion in revenue annually, officials said. Approximately 17,000 Ascension Michigan employees accepted job offers from Henry Ford, and the combined health system will employ roughly 50,000 people across 550 sites of care, officials said at a Tuesday press conference on Detroit’s east side at Henry Ford St.
John Hospital, formerly known as Ascension St. John. “From Downriver to Grand Blanc, from Detroit to Jackson, from West Bloomfield to Warren and everything in between and around, tackling the most complex care, offering compassionate preventative care and breaking down barriers to and inequities in healthcare access and treatment,” said CEO Bob Riney, who will lead the combined organization.
“We are now 13 acute care hospitals strong.” The joint venture was first announced last fall. Henry Ford Health is the majority owner with an 80% governance stake.
Ascension, a St. Louis-based private health care system, has a 20% ownership and governance stake and Senior Vice President Carol Schmidt become Henry Ford Hea.
